As the modern day battlefield becomes increasingly dependent upon electronics, the requirement for digital imaging capabilities is becoming an integral part of many weapon systems. This is true for a whole range of modern defense equipment from helmet mounted cameras for infantry to sophisticated arrays of imaging equipment on large platforms such as aircraft and submarines. Indeed, a new type of platform has become the quintessential application of digital imaging in defense: the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

However, few of these applications share common requirements: from helmet mounted systems requiring medium resolution at full video rates in as small a package as possible to UAV mounted cameras which, for high altitude operation, will require extremely high resolution with only moderate frame rates.
